Lotus Averil MacDowell, known for her meticulous depictions of objects and scenery, has been painting professionally since 1972. She has been the recipient of three Artist-In-Residence grants and has written a working textbook for teachers called "Ideas for Art".

Lotus' medium is primarily watercolor, using a controlled approach and recording details with accuracy in both rendering and color. Her particular interests are in the study of light, shadow, and architecture.

Lotus received her BFA from West Virginia University with an emphasis in Painting and pursues a full-time career in art. She is also the owner of Artworks, a gallery and custom frame shop in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Her works are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Born in Boston, the child of Irish and Canadian parents, Lotus has spent most of her life in West Virginia. Her subjects reflect "the appreciation of the ordinary" often depicting places and subjects that are less than perfect, which gives them their sense of believability. A viewer of Lotus' work does not need to be well-versed in art to be able to enjoy it. Each of us at one time or another has known a train station or general store and the subjects of these prints feature aspects of life from a bygone or current era.

Lotus does many paintings which are not made into prints. These subjects are  specialized and can be seen periodically on this website. A short paragraph from Lotus is included explaining what her intents and thoughts were. She welcomes questions and other requests about her work at any time.
